Aim: To discuss the
short story "Cop and Anthem"
- HW# 46 Discuss and answer the following questions:
- What indications in the text remind Soapy that it was almost
winter?(20%)
- The wild geese flying south
- Women who don't have a fur coat hugging their husbands
tighter
- The leaves are falling
- What was Soapy's "hibernatorial ambition"? Where was he
planning to go to avoid the cold winter in New York?
- What did Soapy do to try to get himself arrested? Describe each
incident briefly and its result (How did he get out of each trouble)?
- Broke a store window and told the cop he did it but the cop
didn't believe him.
- Ate at a restaurant and didn't pay the bill but the
restaurant manager didn't call the cop, instead, he made Soapy
wash the dishes.
- Blatantly stole a man's umbrella in a cigar store but the
gentleman claimed he took the umbrella from someone else who
might just be Soapy
- Harassed a woman in a park but it turned out the woman was a
prostitute
- Disturbed the welkin by "disorderly conduct in front
of a theater " - yelling drunken gibberish, dancing, howling and
raving; but the cop thought he was a Yale lad who was
celebrating.
- Why didn't Soapy want to live on charity?
- Soapy felt he had his pride and was not willing to trade his
private and personal information to get a loaf of bread.
- Soapy believed the law was more benign( nicer ) than
Philanthropy( charity).
- What did Soapy do to try to get himself arrested by "disorderly
conduct"?
- yelling drunken gibberish, dancing, howling and raving; but
the cop thought he was a Yale lad who was celebrating.
- What came to his mind when he heard the church organ playing?
- The anthem made him remember the days when he still had his
mothers, roses( romance), ambitions( dreams), friends and
pure thoughts.
- What changes did the sweet church organ notes bring to Soapy and
how did his heart respond to it?
- Soapy started seeing the true color of his life ("He viewed
with swift horror the pit into which he had tumbled)- his fallen
life that consisted only of degraded days, unworthy desires,
dead hopes and low motives( tried so hard to break the law and
get caught).
- What was Soapy like when he was younger?
- What did Soapy resolve to do the moment before he got arrested?
- Soapy felt for a moment the excitement of his new mood and
he wanted to battle his desperate fate. He would like to pursue
his old ambitions and the next day he'd go and get work as a
driver and maybe he'd be somebody in the world.
- What would happen to Soapy now as story ended in such an ironic
way?
- (Bonus) What could have made him the way he was as described in the
story?
