Option 1: For students who wish to analyze and collect the poems of others

Select 8-12 poems to include in a poetry anthology. For this project, you will act as editors. You will select the poems based on a specific theme or strand
that appeals to you. Each poem that is selected for the anthology must be accompanied by an explanation and analysis as to why this poem is being included in the collection. The explanation should state why this poem is of particular appeal to you and how it fits with the other poems in the collection. The analysis should state the connection among the poems selected. You will need to determine a title for the collection, an introduction, dedication, table of contents, illustrations for each poem and a short bio of the student-editor.

Option 2: For students who wish to analyze a collection of poems by one poet

Select 8-12 poems written by the same poet to include in an anthology. For this project you will act as editors. Each poem that is selected for the anthology must be accompanied by an explanation as to why this poem is being included in the collection. The explanation should state why this poem is of particular appeal to you and how it fits with the other poems in the collection. The analysis should state the connection among the poems selected. You will need to determine a title for the collection, an introduction, dedication, table of contents, illustrations for each poem and a short bio of the student-editor.

Option 3: Choose three poems by the same author and write about at least 750-word essay discussing and analyzing how the three poems reveal the-

  1. author's personal life and beliefs
  2. overarching themes
  3. unique poetic devices
  4. differences in emotions or points of view

Option 4: Choose three poems written by three different authors and write about at least 750-word essay discussing and analyzing how the three poems reveal the-

  • same subject
  • similiar theme(s)
  • similar or opposite emotions
  • similar or different imagery, diction, symbolism etc

Aim: What is the overarching theme of your poetry anthology? What made you decide on the theme?

Class Activities:

Assessment: You will complete the Introduction using your responses to the "Aim" questions.

06/01/2010

Aim: How does each poem in your anthology reflect the overaching theme?

Class Activities:

Assessment: You will interpret each of the eight poems in the light of the theme. How does the author address the theme using various poetic devices?

06/02 /2010

Aim: How is the author's personal life reflected in the poems you have selected for your anthology? If the author's life is irrelevant, what could have motived him/her to write the poem, for example, historical incident,etc.

Class Activities:

Assessment: You will describe, in your analysis, the impact of the poet's personal life or historical background on his/her writing.

Aim: What are the differences between an interpretation and analysis of poetry?

Suggestions: An interpretation is to explain in your own words WHAT the poem is about-the meaning of the poem; an analysis is to explian HOW and WHY the poem entails such a meaning.

Class Activities: Find a partner and read each other's analysis. Repond to each other's writing: Which part of the writing is interpretation? Analysis? Is your partner in the right direction? Make two suggestions for your partner to improve his/her analysis.

Assessment: You will apply the new understanding of analysis to reexamine your analytical notes abour your poems.

Aim: How do we make illustrations for poems?

Class Activities:

1.Go to the library and find a poetry anthology to see an example how poems are illustrated. For example, Falling Up by Shel Silverstein, Bright Wings by Billy Collins

2. Discuss how to illustrate a poem: Symbolically or literally; What to illustrate- its subject, theme, key imagery, motif and mood;

Assessment: Make 5-8 illustrations for the poems in your anthology.
