Aim: What does "freedom" mean? Do you think that people in the United States are completely free? Why or why not?

Do Now:

What other freedoms are outlined in the First Amendment? Why are these critical to life in the United States? Why do you think the framers of the Constitution included these freedoms when envisioning the nation then being created? If they were alive now, how do you think they would feel about how those ideals have been upheld?

Activities:

1. Describe the cartoon #1 and explain what message it tries to deliver to viewers.

2. Work in groups to investigate different issues currently in the news related to freedom of religion and the separation of church and state or any other freedom related issues ( speech, press and assembly, protest -petition the Government )

3. Work in small groups of four, and each group selects a different article (and topic, for example, freedom of press, speech and protest) collected from the ACLU Religious Liberty page and the First Amendment Center's religion news stories page. Present your topics from the perspectives of people with different viewpoints in a talk show format.

2. Read the information ( court case & history )you have found and try to retell it in your own words. Remember you can't read from your paper when making the presentation.
