Sometimes in life, during certain situations life can be so hard, so difficult to grasp; that's how I feel .
I want to do so many things but then at the same time  I'm only one person. "Doris DeJesus Senior Class Vice President of th graduating clas of 1999". I think it has a nice ring to it, but there is more to it than that alot more.  I want to be a lawer, I want to be a psychologist, I want to stand on stage and thank the academy for my "Outstanding Achiever of Everything She Ever Wanted Award", I want to shine even when it's dark.
I remember as a freshman in the spring of 1996 how Ms. Chan our former school principal would always tell me that I should run for president.  She would say that because I would find myself in her office telling her details of things I thought should be done as a student, for example at that time in the girls restroom there wasn't good enough lighting, so I suggested that it get  fixed, and interesting enough it was actually fixed.  In the spring of 1998 when I was a junior running for Senior Class Vice President 1998-1999, I thought of her and how she would of encouraged it.  My campaign was a powerhouse.  I was so dedicated to my campaign, I spent countless hours in front of my computer making posters with the help of my canner. My most treasured slogan was "Idealistic and realistic true success is conquered when you give the people what they want!" I remember there were times when people would ask me, "what if you don't win?" I would reply "well as long as I know that I did everything in my power to win," meaning staying after school for hours putting posters up and making sure that every inch of wall was covered and most importantly coming up with catchy slogans.  What a sense of triumph I felt on June 5, 1998, election day. When Mr. Zarillo, the senoir advisor said my name and I got up to make my speech and literally everyone in the auditorium that morning was screaming, applauding, whistling in support of me.  It was my moment of glory, and I felt like ahining star.  I  had to wait for the crowd to mellow down so that I could start my speech.  I felt so confident. I was content, content with the fact that I had put my heart and soul into that campaign and succeeded, succeeded because I won the election and accomplished what I set out to achieve.
As I consider future achievements to accomplish, I want to be  a lawyer, I want to be a psychologist, I want to stand on stage and thank the academy for my Outstanding Achievement of Everything She Ever Wanted to Achieve Award, I want to shine even when it's dark.  I could combine being a lawyer and being a pyschologist, and have the best of both worlds and defend thre criminally insane.  I want to go to college and be enthused by the classes I take.  I'll learn about different laws and regulations, I feel it will make me more aware of why they exist in the first place.  Pyschology is the key to understanding why some people act the way they do, the study of the mind.  Why are people triggered to act a certain way?
Your first job is an experience you never forget, and sometimes to get to that first job is to task in itself.  It was late spring of  '98 and I was looking for employment.  It's hard to get that first job because companies are so skeptical of people without experience, that they don't give them a chance, which makes the whole process alot longer than it should be.  I prepared a resume and filled out applications and attached my resume I delivered them personally and even dresed for the part.  I would go back to followed up and would return to see if I would be hired.  Time was quickly running out and I wanted very much to be employed that summer and in my moment of despair I  demanded to be hired at the McDonald's just five blocks from my house.  It is absolutely amazing what determination and will power can do because I was hired and started working on June 13th 1998.  I was extremely pleased because I had satisfied my goal and that goal was to be employed.  It has been an experience, because you get to interact with people on a daily basis and at the same time satisfy their hunger cravings.

Your entire life is a learning experience, which can help you grow as a person.  Alot of things have happened in my life but I still feel like I haven't even begun.  I'm a strong believer in the saying "life is what you make of it."  Success comes to those who want it, those who work for it, strive for it.  Determination, willpower, patience and dedication is what will get me through.

COLLEGE ESSAY

The novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald influenced my view of myself. The story was about a wealthy man named Gatsby and his attempt to gain his true love. His love’s name was Daisy. She had married while Gatsby was away at war. She only loved for convenience and wanted security and wealth.
The novel changed me because it showed how Gatsby tried to win the love and admiration of his peers through his wealth. He gained his riches all in hopes of winning Daisy back. No one really cared for him but they pretended to in order to use him. When things started going down hill for him, no one was there for Gatsby. The love of his life returned to her naturally rich husband and life of submissive luxury. Gatsby was later killed by a jealous husband who mistook Gatsby for his wife’s lover and killer.
The novel showed me that I had to access my actions and find out what purpose they had. At the time I was just geared towards making a fast dollar. It happened so fast and money was so easy to get I never appreciated it. I took it for granted. It (the money) began to wear thin and so did my friends. I realized I had to change my goals and enjoy life while I am still able to.
My realization came about after reading the story. Gatsby and I were alike in some ways. He disregarded his actions for the end result. He didn’t think about the way he obtained his money. Gatsby only thought about what purpose it served, to get Daisy. He and I had to realize that if someone doesn’t want you when you have nothing then their love will amount to nothing. The difference between us is, I realized my fault and changed it. Gatsby continued on his self-destructive path.

                                    Perseverance in my Life
                                         by Amina Alliyu

Throughout my life, I have been faced with many obstacles and challenges. By having perseverance, I was able to overcome most of them. I was able to get into the first High School of my choice, get good grades in my math class, and obtain an  internship in the field of law. All of these which have gained my interest and made me a stronger person in life.

When I was applying to High School, I was so determined to go to Murry Bergtraum. I wished and prayed that I would get accepted and unfortunately, I didn’t. I was so upset and I couldn’t understand why I didn’t get accepted. I met all of their requirements so there was no reason for them not to accept me. By having perseverance, I decided to look for other means of getting into this school. I wrote a letter to the Board of Education stating that I had met all of the requirements of this school and I really wanted to go there. The Board of Education decided to look more into this matter, and they granted me a special admission into this school. I was so happy that I didn’t give up, and was able to get into the school of my choice.

In my junior year of  High School, I wasn’t doing to well in my math class. I was getting low grades on my test exams and I was on the verge of failing. My math teacher told me that I had only little hope left and the only way for me to pass the class was if I pass the Regents Exam(Citywide Test) with a 65 or above. I wasn’t going to give up that easily, so I had made up my mind that I was going to pass this class no matter what it takes. I bought tons of math software and I got a tutor to help me after school. By having perseverance, I was able to pass the Regents Exam with an 84 and pass my math class.

Over the summer, I was looking for an internship that was geared toward the career I wanted to study, law. I really wanted to get a job geared towards law so I can get a feel of what it is like being a lawyer and working in a law firm. I went to several interviews at law firms and was unsuccessful of seeking an internship. I was very disappointed but was able to face the fact. By the time I went back to school, my guidance counselor told me about an internship at Chase. At first I wasn’t really interested because I felt that Chase was geared more towards finances but she talked me into it, and I gave it a try. It was very competitive internship that was only given to 26 students so I really had to try to do my best. I went to the interview and I explained to the interviewer that I really would like to be placed in a legal department if they had one. He told me that he would do his best to place me at my first choice of desire. The interview went very well, and in two days I got the job. Not only at Chase, but in the legal department of Chase. By having perseverance, I was able to gain an internship at one of the city’s top companies and learn more about the career I wanted to study.

By these experiences, I have learned never to give up in what I really want out of life. I have proven to myself and others that I am ready to face any challenge that comes my way. These challenges have made me a stronger person and has made me to believe that you can do anything you want once you put your mind to it. As I move on to the next level in my life, I plan to be a overcomer as well as a leader at what ever I do. With perseverance, I can overcome anything and achieve my goals in life.

                                         College Essay
                                          by Johathan Bonet

I am currently a senior at Murry Bergtraum High School for Business Careers and my major is Legal Studies.  I am also in the Tech Prep Program that is affiliated with the Fashion Institute of Technology (F.I.T.).  My average is an 85 and I am doing pretty well in my classes.  My interests are computers and video games.  I really like computers and want to be a computer engineer or electronics engineer.  I really want to get into computers because I think that they are fascinating and in the future they are going to be the main way in which people communicate with one another.  The best thing about computers is the Internet, because it makes communication between people easier.

I have worked at Century 21 Department Store and at The Hispanic Federation.  At Century 21 I was in the Flying Squad.  Before my shift I would call my manager and he would tell me to which department within the store I should report.  The department I had fun in was the Men’s European Suits. While working at Century 21 I learned what department stores do when they run out of stock in a certain department.  It also taught me that I really don’t want to be in the retailing industry because I am not really interested in that kind of stuff.  I guess what I mean is that I have always like to work with computers and I am used to working with them.  I mean I liked working there because of the workers and the environment. Although that seems like a negative thing I still feel that I learned something while working at Century 21 Department Store.  At The Hispanic Federation I did Data Entry.  I put people’s names, addresses, and phone numbers into a spreadsheet.  Those on the spreadsheet had donated to the Hurricane George Relief.  This position allowed me to work with computers and learn spreadsheet functions, and because I like computers, I enjoyed this job.  I also enjoyed this job because of the workers there. They were very nice my first day there and continued to be nice all the way through.  I also liked it because they provided me with work the minute I walked in the door until I left.  While there I never took a break because there was just so much to do I didn’t have time.

My educational goals are to finish high school and go to college.  I would like to get a Bachelors Degree or a Masters Degree.  Once I finish college I would like to get a job doing either computer engineering or something having to do with computers.  I would also like to design video games for Nintendo or Playstation.  When I find a job I hope to find a place of my own.

If you inherited millions of dollars that could only be used to support charitable works, what good   deeds would you fund and why?
by Ann-Marie Minaya

First, I would fund any any programs that help children and I would visit neighborhoods to assure that there are learning and recreation institutions in the neighborhood. i would want to help America's children because they are our future and perhaps a great resource to America. We are always worrying about children in other countries but we never worry about our own children, that's bad because we should make sure that our people are doing fine before we start worrying about other people. Also I think that the American children are being ignored, neglected, and stereotyped. Not all of us are bad or a waste, there are some of us that do care about the future. But, many children are still being treated like if they had no potential whatsoever. There are many children out there suffering, and not getting the opportunities other fortunate children get. It would be nice to see all or most of the children make progress and become America's great resource.

The second place I would donate money to, is to a disease foundation to find cures for diseases like AIDS virus and AIDS. I would donate money for this kind of research because, it's sad to see someone die that way. It's hard on the person and their family. Even though today a cure for AIDS may seem impossible some money and a little faith can help. Also I'd donate money so there are AIDS awareness classes for children and teenagers in particular because this is the age group where people begin sexual relationships and a class that teaches people what their options are and how to use certain contraceptives which is important because sometimes people are embarrassed to ask about those things, they end up not using protection and end up with an STD or pregnant.

I'd fund a cancer awareness class. There are so many types of cancers it's scary. I think this class would be helpful to those people who think they are invincible and don't take care of their health, especially those that have a family history of a certain cancer. Another reason why I would fund a cancer awareness awareness class is because usually everyone worries about other health problems, and because you usually don't see any cancer awareness classes.

I would also fund animal protection center and wildlife refuges because many animals are getting killed or hurt unnecessarily and many animals are on the verge of becoming extinct. I don't think it's fair to take the life of a creature just for fun or because it is bear or duck season. People should be more concerned of an animal becoming extinct. Some animals are important to nature and it's equilibrium and if they are gone, what will become of nature? And what will become of us?

If I had the money, I wouldn't have any problem giving it to people and to organizations that really need it. Because I have compassion for living things and people. I believe that we are all in this world together to make the world a better place. Especially the children who need our love, support, and guidance as well as discipline, so that they can succeed.

COLLEGE ESSAY
by Johanna Rodriguez

Have you ever heard of that saying that goes; “you learn from experiences?” Well, I ;personally believe that this is quite true. As time goes by and you experience situations that might have been bad or good at the time, But you could always remember what to do and what not to do.
I am an 18 year old girl that has had her share of experiences but I always learn something from them. When I was in junior high school, which I consider those years the most difficult years in my teenage life. Junior high school kids are very vulnerable. They are at a stage when its “cool” to fit in. To be in the in crowd. Well we have all been through those years and unfortunately, my junior high school years were not my greatest.
I lived in a small apartment with my mother and little sister. Obviously only one income was coming into our home. My mother did not have enough money to fill up our closet with clothes. In school people use to make fun of me and my appearance. They thought that I was ugly and stupid. I use to cry myself to sleep sometimes because of all the nasty remarks the other kids use to call me. I was a very timid and quite girl who would let all those kids insult me and I would do nothing about the matter.
I have changed dramatically since then and I am not friends with any of those annoying kids who made my life a living nightmare. I go to the same high school as many of them now, but ironically the shoe is in the other foot now. I have an infinite amount of friends who appreciate me look for me whenever they need a friend or advice. When I see those kids in the hallways, I walk right by them. Thanks to God my family is financially stable and I work as well so I am able to support myself with certain things that I need for school and for myself as well. My physical appearance has changed a great deal, and I have a steady partner who loves me and never puts me down. It’s hard for me to remember the last time I ever felt alone. My friends never give me the chance to even think about how badly I was treated once.
I have learned that during time, you can make anything happen. You should never let people put you down, if anything you should use that as a reason to prove them wrong and become a better person and has the ability to make anything possible.
Realizing that there are many cruel and insecure people out there that, feel it's funny and cool to make fun of others has made me come to this conclusion. You are who you are, never try to prove yourself to everyone because you will never accomplish that. :Prove to yourself that you are indeed a great human being and that you are proud of who you are. This will then make you better than those who did not think so and that makes you a beautiful person.

College Essay
by Mellisa Esponda

Ever since I was a little girl, I think around the age of 5, I always used to think about what I wanted to be when I grew up or "when I be big," as I used to say. Up until the 6th grade, I think, I believed that being a teacher was what I wanted to do. I remember getting all my stuffed animals and forcing my cousins to sit around in a circle. We would do the Pledge of Allegiance, then sing a class song I’d make up, and then I would give them some work and write on a black board.

Later on, I realized that teaching was not what I wanted to really get into. I guess that after exploring the other choices that I have in life, I decided that I would like to be in a more challenging and interesting field of work. This is when I thought of getting into law. I feel that I have the drive, the determination, and I am capable of handling pressure. On top of all that, I also just feel I always have to be right.

I started to read up on the responsibilities of District Attorneys, para-legals, and lawyers. All of the information I discovered really drew me in and helped me in making my decision much easier and faster. I also enjoy watching all of the detective and lawyer TV shows, as well as books on the subject. Immersing myself in these dramas is like being an actual lawyer, because I have to figure out who did the crimes like a real lawyer and detective. I guess that’s because mystery really catches my attention and challenges me.

Now that I figured out what I wanted to be I was set. Well, until I realized another thing; there are so many kinds of law. There’s real estate, corporate and criminal law, among dozens of others. Well, after boggling my mind for a while, my final decision took place. With some thought and a lot of research, I decided corporate law is my calling.

I don’t think I would want to be a real-estate lawyer because that seems to be plain out boring. Criminal law is really interesting, but I don’t think I could really deal with the fact that I might be defending someone guilty or put an innocent person in jail. I wouldn’t be able to face living with this on my mind. This is why I chose corporate law, it may sound like the easy way out, but there is a lot of work that needs to be done in the business world. This is something I discovered after four years of studying business law in Murry Bergtraum High School.

The more I think about college, the more I look forward to my future. And I have to start preparing myself because just yesterday, I could have sworn I was with my stuffed animals and cousins, 3 ½ feet tall, and teaching them the ABC’s. Who knows? Maybe tomorrow I’ll be winning my first case.
